Inclusion and Identity
At Acorn Montessori, every child is valued as an individual. Regardless of culture or ethnic background, gender, or disability, all children are given the opportunity to develop a secure and positive sense of their own identity. This is fundamental to building self-esteem and confidence and supports children in recognising, respecting, and celebrating differences in others.
Our Nurturing Environment
We provide a warm, nurturing environment with a wide range of carefully chosen resources that support children to explore, make choices, and develop their own interests. Through interaction and independent exploration, children learn more about themselves and their abilities. A predictable routine and clearly organised environment enable children to access resources independently, fostering confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.
Teaching Ratios and Individual Support
Our high qualified teacher-to-child ratio of 1:4 allows us to build strong relationships with each child, understand their individual needs, and follow their interests. Children benefit from both group learning and regular one-to-one teaching throughout the week, ensuring each child’s learning journey is carefully supported and extended.
One-to-one sessions focus on key areas of development, including literacy, numeracy, pencil control leading to weekly news book entries, and the use of Montessori materials across Practical Life, Sensorial, Numeracy, and Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
Developing a Sense of Self: Who Am I?
Children are always addressed by name and are supported to develop a strong sense of identity within the school community. Each child has named pegs for personal belongings, a named tray and book bag, and a personalised post box as part of our self-registration system.
A Birthday Train board, displayed at children’s height and featuring individual photographs, celebrates each child’s birth month and strengthens their sense of belonging. Photo albums and a Memorable Moments display are available at all times, allowing children to revisit past experiences, reflect, and take pride in their achievements.
Children are encouraged to make choices throughout the day, such as selecting books at circle time, choosing activities from the shelves, selecting snacks and drinks, choosing the prayer before snack time, and inviting friends to join group activities.
Linking School with Home
We work closely in partnership with families to support each child’s development. Termly meetings are offered, and staff are always available to speak with parents as needed. Families are encouraged to support learning at home through reading, phonics, literacy activities, pencil control, and numeracy, including contributing items to our Sound of the Week.
Parents are also invited into the setting to share their experiences, professions, hobbies, and cultural or religious celebrations, such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, and Ramadan. This strengthens home–school links and enriches children’s understanding of the world around them.
